km/L to MPG – Convert Kilometres per Litre to Miles per Gallon

{KML} km/L ={' '} {formatNumber(UK, 2)} UK MPG

Fuel economy in km/L tells you how many kilometres one litre of fuel will drive. MPG tells you how many miles one gallon will drive. The conversion combines two steps: kilometres → miles (1 mile = 1.609344 km) and litres → gallons. Because the UK and US gallons differ, there are two factors:

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert km/L to MPG?

To convert kilometres per litre to miles per gallon, multiply the km/L value by a factor that depends on the gallon. For UK (Imperial) MPG the factor is 2.824809053, and for US MPG it is 2.352145833. So 8 km/L ≈ 22.60 UK MPG or 18.82 US MPG.

What is the difference between UK MPG and US MPG?

An Imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 litres, while a US gallon is only 3.785411784 litres. Because the US gallon is smaller, the same fuel economy reads as a lower number in US MPG than in UK MPG. Always check which gallon a figure uses before comparing.

Why does 1 km/L equal 2.82 UK MPG but only 2.35 US MPG?

1 km/L means one kilometre per litre. Converting to miles per gallon combines two steps: kilometres to miles (÷ 1.609344) and litres to gallons. A UK gallon holds more litres than a US gallon, so the same km/L gives a larger UK MPG number.

Is a higher km/L or MPG better?

Yes — for both km/L and MPG, a higher number means you travel further on the same amount of fuel, so the vehicle is more efficient. Just remember never to compare a UK MPG figure directly with a US MPG figure.
