Both times are converted to minutes since midnight. The start time is subtracted from the end time to give the duration in minutes, which is then split into hours and minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, or you tick the midnight box, a full 24 hours (1,440 minutes) is added so overnight durations are correct.

How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Enter a start time and an end time in 24-hour format (HH:MM). The calculator works out the duration in hours and minutes, plus the total minutes. If the end time is on the next day, tick the "crosses midnight" box.
What if the end time is after midnight?
Tick "The end time is on the next day (crosses midnight)". The calculator then adds a full 24 hours before working out the duration, so a shift from 22:00 to 02:00 correctly shows 4 hours.
Do I have to use 24-hour time?
Yes — enter times as HH:MM in 24-hour format, for example 09:15 or 17:30. This avoids any AM/PM ambiguity.
How is this different from the hours and minutes calculator?
